SUITABILITY CHECK
Is Ortho-K right for your child?
Four things we check before recommending Ortho-K.
We don't recommend Ortho-K to every child with myopia. A proper assessment comes first — corneal topography, full refraction, and a discussion about overnight wear. Here's what we check:
Age
From age 6 and up. Younger children often show the strongest myopia control response — starting earlier covers more of the critical growth years.
Prescription
Best results up to around –6.00D myopia. Mild-to-moderate astigmatism is often correctable with toric Ortho-K designs; we confirm at assessment.
Corneal shape
Measured with corneal topography at the first visit. Most children have suitable corneal geometry; we'll confirm before you commit to the programme.
Lifestyle fit
Suits children with parental support for overnight wear and consistent daily lens care. Best for kids who prefer freedom from daytime glasses or contacts.

Not sure which tier suits your child?
A suitability assessment includes corneal topography, full refraction, and a discussion of all options. We'll tell you honestly if Ortho-K isn't the right fit. The initial comprehensive eye exam is Medicare bulk-billed ($0 gap). Ortho-K fitting consultations aren't Medicare-rebatable — they're covered by your package fee, not billed per-visit.

COST FACTORS
What affects the cost of Ortho-K?
The lens geometry drives the tier — not the number of consultations.
Prescription strength · Corneal shape · Lens geometry complexity
Standard fit suits children with simpler myopia and regular corneal shape. The lens design is straightforward, so the fitting programme typically runs smoothly with fewer iterations.
Advanced fit covers moderate myopia and the mild corneal irregularities most eyes have. The custom geometry needs more precise calibration — which can mean fit-refinement reviews and occasional lens remakes during the initial period. These are included in your package fee.
Complex fit handles high prescriptions and toric designs, where the fitting programme typically requires more chair time and lens iterations. Again, all of that is inside the package — no surprises when a remake is needed.
YEAR 1–2 vs YEAR 3+
What happens to costs after year two?
The intensive phase is front-loaded. From year three, you move to a simpler maintenance package.
Years 1–2 all-inclusive · Year 3+ lower maintenance cost · No unexpected bills
The first two years carry the most clinical work — topography mapping, lens calibration, fit refinement, and progress checks. After that, your child's corneas are trained. Maintenance covers replacement lenses every two years and 6-monthly progress reviews at significantly lower cost.
| Tier | Years 1–2 (all-inclusive) | Year 3+ per 2 years | Monthly (year 3+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard fit | $1,600 | $1,000 | ~$42/mo |
| Advanced fit | $1,900 | $1,200 | ~$50/mo |
| Complex fit | $2,200 | $1,500 | ~$63/mo |
MEDICARE & PRIVATE HEALTH
Does Medicare or private health cover Ortho-K?
Medicare covers the initial eye exam. Ortho-K fitting is separate — and often partially covered by extras.
Private health extras (Optical) typically contribute $150–$300 toward Ortho-K lenses. Check your benefit under "contact lenses" or "optical aids" in your fund's app before the fitting appointment — exact amounts vary by fund and tier.
We process health fund claims on the spot via HICAPS. Bring your card to the fitting and we'll apply the rebate directly, so you only pay the gap.
PER-MONTH COST COMPARISON
How does Ortho-K compare over 4 years?
Per-month cost across the four real myopia control options — and what each one means day-to-day.
Subscription-style monthly view · 4-year horizon · All myopia control options compared
| Option | Per month | 4-year total | Daytime correction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MiyoSmart glasses | ~$51–53/mo | $2,430–2,550 | Glasses required | Study data: ~60%3 |
| Standard Ortho-K | ~$54/mo | $2,600 | No glasses needed | Studies: 50–60%1 |
| Advanced Ortho-K | ~$65/mo | $3,100 | No glasses needed | Studies: 50–60%1 |
| Complex Ortho-K | ~$77/mo | $3,700 | No glasses needed | Studies: 50–60%1 |
| Atropine + glasses | ~$70–97/mo | $3,360–4,680 | Glasses required | Up to 50% in study4 |
| MiSight daily contacts | ~$95/mo | $4,560 | Daily contact wear | Study data: 59%2 |
All myopia control options shown above have evidence for slowing myopia progression, but they are not identical day-to-day. Ortho-K eliminates daytime correction entirely. MiyoSmart and atropine still need glasses. MiSight needs daily contact handling.
4-year estimates assume typical patterns. Ortho-K rows: 2-year initial package + 1st 2-year maintenance package, divided by 48 months. MiyoSmart: $810–850 per pair (lenses $600 + frame $210–250), replaced every 1.5 years (typical kids' growth/breakage cycle) — 3 pairs over 4 years. Standard SV glasses (atropine combo): $400–600 per pair on the same 1.5-year cycle. MiSight: $285 per 3-month supply, ÷ 3 for monthly cost. Atropine combination: Eikance ($45–60/mo) or compounded atropine (~$50/mo) plus standard frame+lens replacement at the same 1.5-year cycle. Atropine reviews bulk-billed where eligible under children's annual eye exam Medicare items; private review fees may apply.
