WHAT WE STAND FOR · TWO DECADES IN NORTH STRATHFIELD

Twenty years of doing things the right way.

Concord Eyecare has been part of the inner west for over two decades. Over that time, we've had families travel to us from across Sydney for specialty care — Ortho-K fittings, chronic dry eye, and complex myopia management — while still being the local optometrist for thousands of families in Concord, Burwood, Strathfield, and the suburbs around us.

We believe in taking the time to listen properly, explain everything in plain language, and making sure you leave understanding your eyes — not just your prescription.

What's changed over twenty years is the technology. We've invested in advanced diagnostic equipment including OCT scanning, corneal topography, and axial length biometry. We've built a dedicated myopia control clinic for children. We offer IPL therapy for chronic dry eye. And all three of our optometrists are therapeutically endorsed — meaning we can prescribe medications directly, without a GP referral.

What hasn't changed is the approach. We're independently owned, which means we choose our own equipment, our own lens suppliers, and our own frame brands based on what's actually best — not what head office tells us to sell. The optometrist you see today is the same one who'll remember your history next year.

That's what independent optometry should feel like.

WHAT MAKES CONCORD EYECARE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER OPTOMETRISTS

A few things we do that makes us different

We don't rush appointments

No conveyor belt here. We allocate enough time to be thorough — 30 minutes minimum, longer if you need it.

We can prescribe directly

All three optometrists are therapeutically endorsed — we can prescribe medications for eye infections, allergies, glaucoma, and dry eye without a GP referral.

We're independently owned

No head office, no sales targets, no corporate lens deals. We recommend what's best for your eyes — from whichever brand that happens to be.

Paediatric training across the team

All three optometrists have advanced paediatric qualifications. Children's vision isn't a sideline for us — it's a core focus.

Advanced diagnostic equipment

OCT scanning, corneal topography, retinal imaging, and axial length biometry. We invest in the equipment that lets us catch problems early.

Continuity of care

You'll see the same optometrist every visit. We know your history, your family, and your eyes — no starting from scratch each time.

MEET THE TEAM

The people who'll look after your eyes.

Three therapeutically endorsed optometrists with more than 60 years of combined experience between them. You'll see the same optometrist at every visit — because continuity matters more than convenience.

Optometrist Mark Joung with black hair in a blue sweater and collared shirt stands in an office lobby with a wooden wall, potted plants, and a blurred logo and text in the background.

PRINCIPAL OPTOMETRIST

Dr Mark Joung

Myopia control, orthokeratology, and dry eye.

B.Optom (Hons) UNSW Grad Cert Ocular Therapeutics Advanced Paediatric Eye Care — UNSW Orthokeratology Society of Oceania Therapeutic Prescriber

Mark graduated from UNSW in 2006 with Honours in Optometry and the Ciba Vision Award for contact lens performance. He's therapeutically endorsed — meaning he can prescribe medications directly without a GP referral — and holds postgraduate qualifications in Advanced Paediatric Eye Care (UNSW) and Ocular Therapeutics.

He has a special interest in myopia control, orthokeratology, and dry eye management — partly because he's a high myope himself, so he genuinely understands what his patients are going through.

Mark was an early adopter of MiyoSmart in Australia, with a longstanding clinical focus on evidence-based myopia management. He's a member of the Orthokeratology Society of Oceania and has worked closely with ophthalmologists in managing glaucoma, diabetes, and complex eye conditions.

Outside the practice, Mark is a dad of two who spends his downtime cycling, gardening, and being dragged to playgrounds.

Optometrist Nikki Peng with long hair, wearing a blazer, smiling at the camera in an office reception area with a plant and a wooden wall with a logo in the background.

OPTOMETRIST

Dr Nikki Peng

Children's vision, myopia, and dry eye.

B.Optom (Hons, First Class) UNSW Grad Cert Ocular Therapeutics Advanced Children's Vision — ACO Therapeutic Prescriber

Nikki graduated from UNSW in 2006 with First Class Honours and spent over five years in contact lens research at the Brien Holden Vision Institute — one of the world's leading eye research centres. That research background shows in the way she approaches fittings.

She's therapeutically endorsed with a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics from UNSW, and holds an Advanced Children's Vision qualification from the Australian College of Optometry. At Concord Eyecare she focuses on children's vision and myopia control, dry eye disease, and ocular disease co-management, working closely with local ophthalmologists.

Nikki's published work in mivision on dry eye disease reflects a long-standing clinical interest that continues at the practice today. Her research training at the Brien Holden Vision Institute informs how she approaches complex contact lens fits and children's myopia management.

When she's not in the practice, Nikki is a mum of two who enjoys creative arts in her spare time.

Optometrist Vivian Li with glasses smiling at the camera in an office lobby with green and brown walls, a flower plant on the left, and a wooden sign in the background.

OPTOMETRIST

Dr Vivian Li

Behavioural optometry, Myopia Control and children's vision.

Vivian graduated with Honours in Optometry in 2004 and was awarded the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrist Prize for best overall performance in Binocular and Children's Vision — which gives you a sense of where her passion lies.

She's therapeutically endorsed with a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics, and holds an Advanced Children's Vision qualification from the Australian College of Optometry. She has a special interest in children's vision and myopia management, and brings extensive experience in ocular disease co-management from years working alongside GPs and ophthalmologists — including time in rural NSW in Dubbo and Cobar, where you learn to handle just about everything.

B.Optom (Hons) Grad Cert Ocular Therapeutics Advanced Children's Vision — ACO Therapeutic Prescriber
Vivian's behavioural optometry training adds a dimension most practices don't offer — assessing how vision and eye movement affect learning, reading, and focus in children. It's particularly valuable where myopia overlaps with accommodative or convergence issues.

CLINICAL FOCUS AREAS

Where we've gone deeper.

We cover the full range of clinical optometry — from comprehensive eye exams to contact lens fitting and complex prescriptions. These are the three areas we've trained most deeply in.

E-Eye IPL device for dry eye treatment at Concord Eyecare

Dry Eye & IPL Therapy

Chronic dry eye is one of the most under-treated conditions in eyecare. We run proper assessments to find the root cause — meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis, evaporative dry eye — and offer IPL therapy using the E-Eye device for patients who don't respond to drops alone.

Dry Eye Treatment
Children's eye examination at Concord Eyecare

Children's Vision

All three optometrists have advanced paediatric training, and Dr Li's behavioural optometry background adds extra depth for children with reading or learning difficulties. First eye test from age 3 — bulk billed under Medicare for eligible cardholders.

Children's Eye Care

CONTINUITY OF CARE

Complex care doesn't stop at the door.

For families in ongoing care — Ortho-K, myopia control, dry eye, complex prescriptions — the first appointment is only the start. Here's what happens after.

01

A structured review schedule, not a one-off fit

Every Ortho-K fit includes a 1-day, 1-week, 1-month, and then 3–6 month review cycle. We do a slit lamp and fluorescein check at every visit — because what goes wrong with overnight contact lenses tends to go wrong gradually, and routine matters.

02

Direct access when something doesn't feel right

Ortho-K families get Dr Joung's direct mobile for urgent concerns between reviews. Not a call centre, not an online form — the clinician who fitted the lens. The number is covered in the patient handover along with what to watch for.

03

A specialist pathway, already in place

If something does need ophthalmologist input, we have an established referral relationship with Sydney Eye Hospital. No week-long GP waits, no wondering where to go. We make the call and the pathway opens.

DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT

We invest in the equipment that matters.

We don't just rely on the basics. Our practice is equipped with advanced diagnostic technology that lets us see problems earlier and more accurately than a standard eye test.

Zeiss OCT scanner at Concord Eyecare

OCT Scanner

Cross-section imaging of your retina and optic nerve. Picks up glaucoma and macular changes years before symptoms appear.

Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer

Visual Field Analyser

Tests peripheral vision — critical for glaucoma, neurological conditions, and driving fitness assessments.

E-Eye IPL therapy device

E-Eye IPL

Intense pulsed light therapy for meibomian gland dysfunction — a common cause of chronic dry eye.

Medmont E-300 corneal topographer

Corneal Topographer

Maps the surface of your cornea in detail. Essential for contact lens fitting, Ortho-K, and detecting keratoconus.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Things patients often ask us.

Do I need a GP referral to see an optometrist?

No — you can book an optometrist directly without a GP referral. All three of our optometrists at Concord Eyecare are therapeutically endorsed by the Optometry Board of Australia, which means we can diagnose and prescribe prescription eye medications for conditions like dry eye, infections, and inflammation without sending you to a GP first.

Is my eye test bulk-billed, and how often can I claim it on Medicare?

Yes — standard comprehensive eye exams are currently bulk-billed at Concord Eyecare for eligible Medicare cardholders. Under current Medicare rules, adults under 65 can claim a bulk-billed exam every 3 years, and patients aged 65+ can claim annually. Additional imaging or specialty testing may incur an out-of-pocket fee, which we'll always discuss upfront.

Will I see the same optometrist at every visit?

Yes. We're an independently owned Concord practice, and you'll see the same optometrist — Dr Mark Joung, Dr Nikki Peng, or Dr Vivian Li — at every visit. Continuity matters for multi-year care like myopia control and Ortho-K, because your optometrist knows your history, your eyes, and your family.

How is Concord Eyecare different from a chain optometrist?

We're an independent optometry practice, not a retail chain. That means longer consultations, no head-office frame quotas, equipment chosen by our optometrists (including OCT, corneal topography, and Zeiss IOLMaster 500 axial-length biometry), and services most chains don't offer — Ortho-K, IPL dry eye treatment, and axial-length-based myopia management.

How much does Ortho-K cost at Concord Eyecare, and what's included?

Ortho-K at Concord Eyecare starts from $1,600, which includes the initial consultation, custom lens design using Medmont corneal topography, all scheduled follow-up fittings, and lens care instructions. Most private health funds rebate Ortho-K under extras item 874. Medicare does not cover Ortho-K fitting. We'll give you an itemised quote before you commit.

How much does IPL dry eye treatment cost, and how many sessions will I need?

IPL for dry eye is $800 for a course of four sessions at Concord Eyecare, typically spaced over about 10 weeks. We use the E-Eye IPL device, and candidacy is confirmed at an initial dry eye assessment. Outcomes vary between patients. Maintenance sessions are usually considered every 6 to 12 months depending on individual response.

How do you measure if my child's short-sightedness is getting worse?

We use the Zeiss IOLMaster 500 to measure your child's axial length — the length of their eye — to around 0.01mm accuracy. Axial length change is a more sensitive indicator of myopia progression than prescription change alone, and most Sydney optometrists don't have this equipment. We track it at every myopia control review.

At what age should my child have their first eye test?

We recommend a first comprehensive eye test from age 3, then again before starting school, and every 1 to 2 years after that. Children's eye exams are bulk-billed under Medicare at Concord Eyecare for eligible cardholders. If we pick up signs of myopia, we can start a tailored myopia management discussion the same day.

More Questions

What happens if my child's Ortho-K lens sticks or their eye looks red at night?

If your child has an urgent issue outside clinic hours, you can reach your treating optometrist directly by mobile — a number we provide to every Ortho-K family at the fitting appointment. Most issues are minor and resolve with rewetting drops, but we want you supported 24/7, particularly if you're travelling in to see us from across Sydney.

Do you accept my private health fund, and can I claim on the spot with HICAPS?

Yes. We process all major Australian health funds on the spot via HICAPS, including Bupa, Medibank, NIB, HCF, AHM, Teachers Health, Police Health, Defence Health, and more. You'll only pay any gap at the time of your visit. Health fund extras typically rebate glasses, contact lenses, and Ortho-K lenses (item 874).
